Learn about the new TV app introduced in macOS Catalina.
In this lesson for What’s New in macOS Catalina, I look at the new TV app. In previous versions of macOS, you rented and purchased videos through iTunes. This is also where you would import your own movies. With macOS Catalina, you do this through the new TV App. You rent, purchase, and import movies directly through the TV App. You can create playlists and download movies and TV shows as well. In this lesson, I go through the interface and the basics of the new TV app in macOS Catalina.
Video Transcript (video also has closed captions):
Speaker: In this video, we’re going to take a look at the new TV app we have with macOS Catalina. Let’s go to my Mac. In my docu, you’re going to see I have the TV app. With the TV app, we can watch any movies and TV shows that we purchased or rented, and we can also import our movies into it. Again, this used to be in iTunes in previous versions of macOS. Well, with macOS Catalina, Apple separated all the different media types. We have a podcast app, we have a music app, and now, we have a TV app. Let’s click on it to open it up and take a look at it. Now, we’re looking at the TV app. Let’s go over to Watch Now. With Watch Now, we’re able to see any shows that we’re watching like the next episode of a show that we’re watching. Also, if we started watching a show, I started watching the Daryl Hall and John Oates concert, it shows up in Watch Now. I’m also an Apple TV+ subscriber, so if I wanted to the next episode of Servant, I click on this, and I’m able to watch episode 9 of the Servant. This keeps track of what episodes we’ve watched.
I’m going to swipe up here. We can also watch shows on other channels. I have HBO here. I click on it, and now I can browse around HBO. If I want to watch it, what I would first need to do is I would need to subscribe to it through Apple. I am an HBO subscriber, but I do it through Comcast, so I can now watch HBO through the Apple TV app because I did not subscribe through Apple. Let’s go back. I’m going to go back over and click on the left arrow; it takes us back. Now, we’re back at Watch Now. We also have movies, TV shows, and kids. This is where we can find different movies and TV shows and kid’s shows to watch.
When I click on Movies here, it’s going to show me different movies that I can watch. Let’s say I wanted to watch One Upon a Time in Hollywood. I click on it, and now, what I can do is I can buy it or rent it, and then I can also add it to Up Next. What does this do? Well, when I click on Up Next, it adds it to my Watch Now. Now I didn’t rent or buy it yet; all I did was added to my Watch Now. Let’s go ahead and click on Watch Now. You’re going to see we have when I swipe back down, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I’m ready to watch it. I click on it, and I go on rent it or buy it.
If I want to remove it from the Watch Now list, I click on it again, and when I click on In Up Next; it’ll remove it from Watch Now. Now, it is no longer going to be in Watch Now. We can do that with any movies, TV shows, as well as shows for kids. We also have our library. These are movies and TV shows that we’ve purchased, as well as anything that we’ve imported into the TV app. If I create my movie, I can import it into the TV app. To do that, we go up under File in the menu bar, and then we go over to Import. I can also drag and drop.
Over on the left in the sidebar, we have our different categories. I can see what’s been recently added. I can only see my movies, only my TV shows, and 4K and HDR movies and TV shows. I can also view them by genres. Now let’s say I import a movie and it’s actually a TV show. What I can do is I can view the information about anything that I import into the TV app and then I can change it.
Let’s go over to Cars here. Now I did not import this in. I purchased this, but I still have access to that information. To do that, what we’ll do is we click on the More button, the ellipsis here, and you’re going to see Get Info. A new window will open up, and now I can change the information about this movie. Now I can’t change everything. This is a movie, and when we go over to Options here, you’re going to see it as a movie, and I can’t change it.
If I import a movie, what I’m able to do is I’m able to change it to a TV show or another media type, so then it will show up in the right category here. Being that I bought this, I can’t change some of the information. If I want to change the genres, I go over to Details, and you’re going to see we have the genres here. If you want to change the information on a movie, click through the different categories and see what you can change. I’m going to click on Okay. Let’s go back over to my More button here, the ellipsis. I can also download it. I was going somewhere I didn’t have internet, I’d be able to download it and then watch the movie.
I can mark it as unwatched, so then it will show up in my Watch Now. Then I can also add it to a playlist. Now I do not have any playlist. Let’s go ahead and create a new playlist. When I do that, let’s click on Add Playlist, you’re going to see we have my playlists here. I can create playlists in different movies and TV shows. When we look at this, you’re going to see we have our download so I can download it. Then I have my ellipsis, which brings us back to my different options. Again, I can mark it as unwatched, add it to a playlist and get information, and then, I can remove it from a playlist and delete it from my library.
What else do we have? I’m just going to go back over to my movies here. To play a movie, all we have to do is click on the Play button. Controls will show over the top of the movie, or we can go up to the menu bar, and you’re going to see Controls. If you’re not signed in to your account, the first thing you’ll need to do is you’ll need to sign in to your account. Once you do that, you’ll be able to purchase, rent, and then view your purchased movies. When you click on Account, you can also redeem any gift codes, view your purchased items, and check for available downloads.
Then if you want to view the preferences, you go up under TV and then you’re going to see preferences. I select it; a new window opens up. From here, I can go through the different preferences. You saw a lot of the same options in iTunes. That’s a look at the TV app on the Mac. With the TV app, we can now watch and rent movies and keep our movies in a separate app. It is no longer in iTunes. It’s on the TV app. We have a lot of the same options as we did in iTunes. Let’s clarify a little bit more because we’re just dealing with our media. No longer are we dealing with our podcast and our music. Once we open up the TV app and sign in, we’re able to rent and purchase movies and TV shows, and then we can also import our movies into the app.

Let’s clarify a little bit more because we’re just dealing with our media. No longer are we dealing with our podcast and our music.
